Help AAHPM Retain its Voice in the House of Medicine
Count Us In at the AMA
Through the American Medical Association (AMA), AAHPM has been afforded tremendous opportunities to increase awareness of the field, advance the interests of patients with serious illness, and promote policy that services hospice and palliative medicine providers. However, if AAHPM cannot increase the number of our physician members (regular and emeritus) who are also members of the AMA by March 31, 2023, Hospice and Palliative Medicine will lose representation in the AMA House of Delegates and other key AMA bodies.
We are asking YOU to please join the AMA or renew your membership by March 31, 2023. (AAHPM will be assessed on 2023 AMA memberships.)
When AAHPM members join the AMA, you help the Academy maintain its representation at the AMA and ensure that patients with serious illnesses and the professionals that care for them have a voice in the House of Medicine.
Learn why this is mission-critical to the field of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
AAHPM Under Review
AAHPM's continued representation in the American Medical Association (AMA) depends on having a minimum number of Academy members (practicing/emeritus physicians) who are also members of the AMA. AAHPM’s status is reviewed every five years, and we are up for review in April 2023. We are currently well under the required threshold and will need YOUR help to make up the difference before March 31, 2023.
Why This is Important
AAHPM's representation in the AMA is mission-critical to the field of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Whether addressing the future of medical education, the ability of physicians to practice without undue intrusion into medical decision-making, balanced opioid policy, sustainable reimbursement, or permanent telehealth flexibilities, AAHPM is fighting for its members. But we can't do it alone. That's why the Academy is a proud partner of the American Medical Association.
As an AAHPM member, your membership in the AMA helps ensure the Academy can continue to:
- lead the AMA Pain and Palliative Medicine Section Council (AAHPM's delegate is the elected chair)
- influence AMA policymaking on key issues of importance to our field, as well as updates to the Code of Medical Ethics addressing serious illness and end of life
- increase awareness of HPM among other physicians and medical students looking to select a field
- enjoy representation on AMA bodies, including:
- the House of Delegates …the key policymaking body for AMA which also directs how AMA engages with lawmakers and regulators.
- the Substance Use and Pain Care Task Force …where the Academy offers a unique voice, urging balanced public policy that recognizes patients with legitimate need and the prescribing patterns appropriate for HPM practice.
- the AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) Advisory Committee … as the RUC recommends values for CPT codes to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (such as codes for advance care planning, complex chronic care management, principal care management – plus new telehealth codes), it's crucial for AAHPM to help guide such deliberation.
