The Art of Caring
As students of medicine, we learn human anatomy
through the dissection of a body
that rather recently was alive.
I’ve been thinking
about the meaning of this experience in the anatomy lab;
and how to convey that meaning—both
to those of us going through this experience,
and to those of you who are wondering,
“What is this about? Was this a good choice?”
You, the family and friends of the donors,
need to know:
the gift of your loved ones’ body
was not only a selfless act,
but also a powerful act,
one that is changing our lives.
Our experience with these bodies is changing
how we see, how we act, and who we are.
