Bruno Costa, MD and Tammy Quest, MD FAAHPM at Emory

Are you passionate about advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in hospice and palliative medicine (HPM)? The Next Gen Scholars for Equity in Hospice and Palliative Medicine program is seeking both scholars and sponsors for 2025!

This unique program, led by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), is designed to support medical residents from historically underrepresented or marginalized communities by fostering mentorship and professional growth in the field of HPM.

Why Join the Next Gen Program?
The goal of this initiative is to inspire medical residents from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in HPM. Priority will be given to scholar applicants from communities that are traditionally underrepresented in the workforce and leadership roles within the profession.

How the Program Works

  • Two-Year Mentorship: AAHPM will pair 8 scholars with experienced leaders in HPM who align with their interests and practice locations.
  • Regular Collaboration: Scholars and sponsors will connect monthly through virtual meetings, emails, and phone calls to work on a scholarly project and focus on career development.
  • Goal Setting and Progress: Together, scholars and sponsors will set clear goals for the program and track progress over the two years.

What AAHPM Provides
Participants will receive comprehensive support, including:

  • Funding for one in-person scholar-sponsor meeting per year.
  • Sponsorship for the scholar’s participation in the Annual Assembly.
  • Recognition with an award for the scholar who produces the most outstanding project.
  • Quarterly Zoom meetings with all scholars and sponsors to facilitate networking and collaboration.
