The AAHPM Next Gen Scholars for Equity in HPM program is shaping the future of hospice and palliative medicine. By supporting emerging clinicians from communities underrepresented in HPM, the program helps advance equitable, patient-centered care. Through mentorship, professional development, and a strong sense of community, scholars are gaining the tools and connections they need to grow as leaders in the field.

Today, we’re highlighting the journey and perspective of Next Gen Scholar Alexis Webber, MD MS.
- What inspired you to pursue this opportunity?
I am interested in incorporating palliative care training into surgical practice, and I felt this program would provide an opportunity to connect with colleagues and gain exposure to leaders in the field of palliative care education.
- What do you hope to gain from the program?
I hope to further develop my skills at the intersection of surgery and palliative care, expand my professional network, and learn from leaders who are actively shaping palliative care education and integration into surgical training.
- What has been the biggest benefit to being a scholar in the program?
The most meaningful benefit has been the mentorship and the opportunity to connect with peers who share similar interests in advancing palliative care within their respective fields.
- What is something you have accomplished already that you are really proud of?
I am proud of being invited to contribute a book chapter and of my involvement in surgical education for medical students interested in surgery at my home institution.
5. How do you see this program benefiting you in the future?
I see this program helping me build strong professional connections and providing practical tools to better integrate my interests in surgery and palliative care education as I develop my career.
6. What would you envision for the future of this program?
I hope the program continues to expand access for trainees to leaders in the field. Exposure to palliative care education can vary widely depending on institutional resources, and this program helps bridge that gap by providing mentorship, networking, and a structured framework for professional development.
It takes a community to build the future of hospice and palliative medicine, and we encourage you to participate in a network of individuals committed to mentorship, equity, and leadership development. Please consider donating to the Next Gen Scholars Fund to ensure that more scholars can access the opportunities and connections that shape meaningful careers and better care for all patients.
