Passionate about advancing equity in hospice and palliative medicine?
The Next Gen Scholars for Equity in HPM program—led by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM)—is now accepting 2025 scholar and sponsor applications. This initiative supports medical residents from historically underrepresented communities, helping them explore and pursue careers in HPM through mentorship and professional development.
How It Works
Eight scholars will be paired with experienced HPM leaders for a two-year mentorship focused on scholarly projects and career growth. Monthly virtual check-ins, one annual in-person meeting, Assembly sponsorship, and networking opportunities are all included. Scholars and sponsors work closely to set goals, track progress, and receive ongoing support from AAHPM.
Want to know what it’s like to participate?
Hear directly from a Next Gen sponsor and scholar as they reflect on their experience and impact through the program.

What inspired you to pursue this opportunity?
HPM is a relatively small community and program at most institutions. Despite this, I wanted to pursue this program to create a larger outlook on the field- where it is right now and where it is going.

Can you share a moment or aspect of your sponsorship experience that felt especially meaningful or rewarding?
It was incredibly rewarding to attend the 2025 AAHPM meeting with my mentee, Nicoy Downie, MD. I loved watching him make connections with his peers and with leaders in the AAHPM community. He did an incredible job presenting his research from the past year. I can see how these experiences have opened doors for him and created relationships that will sustain him as he continues his career path.
