Understanding Key DEI Terms
Shared language helps build a more inclusive and equitable community. The following definitions support clarity and consistency.
Diversity
Diversity reflects the composition of a group across a range of identities and backgrounds, as well as the collective strength of their experiences, perspectives, and skills.
Equitable Environment
An equitable environment actively addresses both intentional and unintentional bias, harassment, and discrimination. It focuses on identifying and removing barriers to ensure full participation at individual and systemic levels.
Inclusion
Inclusion is the practice of creating policies, processes, and environments that provide equal access to opportunities and resources, supporting individuals in contributing fully to organizational success.

To better understand and serve our members, AAHPM collects demographic data in a voluntary, confidential, and secure manner.

2022 DEI Assessment
AAHPM engaged external consultants, the Exeter Group, to conduct a comprehensive DEI assessment from July 2021 through July 2022.
The assessment included:
- A DEI survey
- Stakeholder interviews
- Focus groups
- Member data analysis
- Review of documents and learning resources
This work established a foundation for ongoing DEI strategy and organizational improvement.
Membership Demographics
In 2022, 5,469 members were invited to participate in the DEI survey. A total of 739 members responded, resulting in a response rate of 13.51 percent.
