- Can you introduce yourself and tell us what committee you’re a part of within AAHPM?
I’m Perihan El-Shanawany, MD and I currently serve as Chair of the Leadership and Career Development Committee within AAHPM. I have a background in family medicine, palliative care, biomedical ethics, and healthcare leadership, and it’s an honor to support the Academy’s mission through this role. - How long have you been a member of the Academy, and how did you get involved in a volunteer position?
I’ve been a member of AAHPM since 2012, and my volunteer journey began by participating as a member of the committee. Over time, I saw the impact of member-led initiatives from my committee as well as others and felt inspired to become more involved within the academy. - What motivated you to volunteer for a committee role?
I’ve always believed that leadership in our field requires intentional cultivation, and I wanted to help create opportunities for others to grow and lead. Volunteering in this role allows me to give back to the profession while shaping the future of palliative care leadership. - Why is supporting AAHPM important to you personally or professionally?
AAHPM has been a constant source of professional growth, advocacy, and connection. Supporting the Academy allows me to contribute to a vibrant community that shares my passion for compassionate, high-quality care. - How do you feel your committee’s work contributes to the broader mission of the Academy?
Our committee is deeply aligned with the Academy’s mission by fostering leadership skills and supporting career advancement across all stages of professional development. By investing in people, we strengthen the field’s capacity to lead change and ensure sustainability in serious illness care. - What keeps you engaged and motivated to contribute your time?
I stay motivated by seeing the real-world impact of our work—whether it’s a new leader gaining confidence or a successful workshop that sparks mentorship connections. The collective energy and shared purpose within the committee are incredibly rewarding. - What have you gained personally or professionally from volunteering in this capacity?
Professionally, I’ve gained insights into organizational leadership and strategy that have enhanced my own administrative work. Personally, I’ve built lasting relationships with inspiring colleagues who share a commitment to servant leadership and lifelong learning. - How has this experience helped you connect with others in your field?
This experience has opened doors to meaningful collaborations, mentorship exchanges, and friendships across the country. It’s a powerful reminder that we are stronger and more innovative when we support each other’s growth. - What would you say to someone who’s considering joining a committee or volunteering within AAHPM for the first time?
I would say—jump in! You don’t need to have all the answers. Just bring your passion and curiosity. The Academy is full of generous, thoughtful members who will welcome you and help you find your place. - Any final words of encouragement or insights you’d like to share with fellow members or potential volunteers?
Leadership begins with showing up. Volunteering with AAHPM is not only a way to give back—it’s an investment in your own growth and in the future of our field. Every voice matters, and there’s a space for everyone to contribute.
