2027 Call for Proposals
Research Methods & Career Development Sessions
Contribute to the future of hospice and palliative care research by presenting at the 2027 State of the Science Symposium, a full-day pre-conference symposium taking place March 17, 2027, at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA, before the 2027 Annual Assembly.
Researchers, clinician scientists, educators, and interdisciplinary teams are invited to submit proposals for one of two presentation opportunities.

Share Innovative Approaches to Research
Lead an interactive workshop that introduces attendees to cutting-edge research methods that can advance hospice and palliative care science.
This opportunity is open to:
- Methodologists
- Clinician scientists
- Social scientists
- Interdisciplinary research teams
- Researchers from related disciplines
Selected presenters will facilitate a:
- 105-minute interactive workshop
- Active audience participation required
- Hands-on learning encouraged
- Practical tools and takeaways expected
Participants should leave with actionable resources, templates, skills, or frameworks they can immediately apply in their own research.
Abstracts must be 350 words or less and include:
- Description of the research method
- Relevance to hospice and palliative care research
- Audience engagement strategies
- Practical examples or case studies
- Learning outcomes and takeaways
- Completion of Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form
- 2 to 5 behavioral objectives
- Presenter expertise statement (250 words or less)
Proposals will be evaluated on:
- Innovation and relevance
- Scientific importance
- Audience engagement
- Educational value
- Applicability across research settings
- Fit for an intermediate to advanced research audience
Up to three proposals will be selected.
Help Researchers Advance Their Careers
Lead a breakout session focused on professional growth, leadership development, and career advancement for researchers and clinician scientists.
Selected presenters will facilitate a:
- 60-minute breakout session
- Interactive learning experience
- Practical skill development
- Audience discussion and engagement
Panels and multi-presenter formats are encouraged.
Proposals may address:
- Leadership development
- Team management and collaboration
- Grant writing and research funding
- Academic promotion and tenure
- Negotiation skills
- Career transitions
- Alternative career pathways
- Mentorship and sponsorship
- Scientific communication
- Public speaking
- Media engagement
- Work-life integration
- Burnout prevention
- Research career resilience
Abstracts must be 350 words or less and include:
- Description of the topic and rationale
- Importance to research career development
- Interactive learning approach
- Knowledge and skills transfer strategy
- Intended audience
- Practical tools, resources, and takeaways
Successful proposals will:
- Offer actionable career guidance
- Promote participant engagement
- Support researchers across career stages
- Provide practical strategies attendees can implement immediately
- Completion of Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form
- 2 to 5 behavioral objectives
- Presenter expertise statement (250 words or less)

Submission Guidelines
Multiple submissions are permitted. To ensure quality review, applicants should limit submissions to their top two proposals.
All applications must be submitted through the AAHPM online application portal. Email and paper submissions will not be accepted.
Faculty selected to present are required to:
- Register for the State of the Science Symposium
- Attend the symposium in person
- Cover applicable registration fees
- Arrange and pay for travel and lodging expenses
Please note that virtual presentation options will not be available.

Please note: The current Call for Proposals is exclusively for presentation at the State of the Science Symposium. The Fall Call for Abstracts, opening Tuesday, September 8, is the submission pathway for research presentations across the full Annual Assembly program.
