Long-Term Volunteer Opportunities
AAHPM long-term volunteer opportunities require for members to serve on a community, council or committee for 2 or more years.
Call for Volunteers
The 2026 Call for Volunteers is now open through Thursday, November 20.
This call is held annually to allow members to be a part of our standing committees, councils, working groups, advisory groups and editorial boards.
Volunteer service is primarily completed through a combination of e-mail correspondence and conference calls to advance specific committee charges.
Eligibility Requirements
- Volunteers are appointed to serve a two-year term.
- Applicants must be AAHPM members in good standing.
- Be sure to have your CV/resume ready to upload.
Volunteer Options:
Committee: Volunteer service is primarily completed through a combination of email correspondence and conference calls to advance specific committee charges. Committee members are appointed to serve a two-year term.
Council: Volunteer service is completed through a combination of email correspondence and conference calls to advance specific council charges. Council members are appointed to serve a two-year term.
Working Group: Volunteer service may require a rapid response and include monthly (or more frequent) conference calls and email correspondence to address emerging issues. Working Group members serve a two-year term.
Advisory Group: Volunteer service is completed through a combination of email correspondence and conference calls to advance specific charges. The group meets in an advisory capacity as specific issues arise. Advisory Group members serve a two-year term.
Task Force: This is a temporary, focused group assembled to achieve a specific mission, solve a defined problem, or undertake a particular project. A task force is created on an as-needed basis by the Board and once their charge is completed they will disband.
Editorial Board: A group of experts that provides an Academy publication with guidance, credibility, and quality control. For AAHPM, the editorial board advises the editor in chief and assists in shaping the editorial direction for the publication in a way that best represents the organization.

Call for Community Leaders
Joining the ranks of a Community Leader is an ideal foundation for moving up to leadership roles within the Academy, and it also keeps you up-to-date with the Academy’s activities, making certain that the voices of your distinct group of members are amplified.
This three year leadership role includes built in mentorship, attending quarterly Community Leader Town Hall calls, posting community-related messages on Connect and planning, developing, and promoting meetings throughout the year.
3-Year Commitment:
- First year: you would serve as Chair Elect, receiving mentorship from the current and out-going Chairs
- Second year: you serve as the Chair, the leader of the SIG, and lead the onsite SIG meeting at the Annual Assembly.
- Third year: you would serve as the Past chair, the veteran in the process helping both the Chair and Chair elect.
Eligibility Requirements
Those interested in submitting an application for a Community Leader position must:
- a member in good standing, and
- be a member of the Community you wish to apply to.
Call for Council Leaders
AAHPM offers members the opportunity to serve on a seven-person leadership team that guides each council. You are encouraged to apply to join the council leadership teams.
Eligibility Requirements
- Agree to serve a two-year term with the possibility of reappointment.
- Be an AAHPM member in good standing for a minimum of 5 consecutive years with previous experience in leadership or committee work.
- Hold current hospice and palliative medicine subspecialty board certification by one of the 10 cosponsoring members of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists, American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM) or the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board.
- Submit a full conflict of interest disclosure with the application and two recommendation forms.
Responsibilities
- Participate in up to eight conference calls annually.
- Participate in an annual in-person meeting.
- Promote and serve as an ambassador of the Academic Palliative Medicine Council, Hospice Medicine Council, and the Pediatrics Council to AAHPM members.
- Provide subject matter expertise to Academy leadership.
- Implement strategic priorities of the councils.

A great way to get involved in AAHPM is to write an article for the:
Quarterly
AAHPM welcomes articles written by members in all areas of hospice and palliative care.
Blog
Blog posts are accepted on any subject related to hospice and palliative care and should be brief and represent you—your personality, your personal experiences, and your views.
Reviewers / Contributors
Volunteer service is focused on a single project involving an intensive amount of work over a short period of time, such as being an item writer for practice exams or a manuscript reviewer. Service is 1 year or less in duration.
