In past years, AAHPM has received grant funding for hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) fellowship programs through the generous support of the following foundations.
Y.C. Ho/Helen and Michael Chiang Foundation Fellowship Grant Program
The Y.C. Ho/Helen and Michael Chiang (Ho/Chiang) Foundation has awarded AAHPM $90,000 grants in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022, and $100,000 in 2025 to partially support either an adult hospice and palliative medicine fellowship training program that offers a pediatric track or a pediatric hospice and palliative medicine fellowship training program preparing physicians to practice as a pediatric hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) subspecialist following training.
One award of $45,000 will be presented for the 2026-2027 academic year with the opportunity to renew for one additional year following an evaluation.
AAHPM thanks the Ho/Chiang Foundation for its generous grants and support of hospice and palliative medicine specialists. The recipients of the Ho/Chiang Foundation Grant Award were:
- 2024-2025 academic year was the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Children’s Hospital Foundation
- 2022-2023 academic year was the University of North Carolina (renewal)
- 2021-2022 academic year was the University of North Carolina
- 2020-2021 academic year was the University of Utah (renewal)
- 2019-2020 academic year was the University of Utah
- 2018-2019 academic year was Indiana University School of Medicine
- 2017-2018 academic year was the University of Alabama at Birmingham
- 2016-2017 academic year was the University of Michigan (renewal)
- 2015-2016 academic year was the University of Michigan

Acknowledgments
The Adtalem Global Education Foundation recently awarded AAHPM a $20,000 grant to support help support and expand the Next Gen Scholars for Equity in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. This program sponsors post-graduate medical residents interested in hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) from communities that are underrepresented in the profession’s workforce.
The Fan Fox & Leslie R. Samuels Foundation previously awarded AAHPM a $445,000 grant to support New York City-based HPM fellowship programs focused on training physicians interested in caring for aging patients in this geographic region.
The Hearst Foundations previously awarded AAHPM a $1.2 million grant to partially fund fellowship training programs. This grant has benefited physicians interested in caring for the older population and becoming mentors, educators, and role models.
The Kindred Gentiva Hospice Foundation previously awarded AAHPM a $300,000 grant to support HPM fellowship programs that offer a longitudinal experience with a strong hospice and home health component teaching physicians the necessary skills to perform in the role of a hospice physician.
