Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowships

Fellowship programs are a period of subspecialty training that a physician may undertake after completing a residency.

A fellowship in the subspecialty of hospice and palliative medicine is mandatory in order to sit for the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) board certification examinations.

Hospice and palliative medicine fellowship programs are available for physicians for the following certifications.

This is only general information. It is important to contact your applicable primary certification board for detailed requirements.

Physicians interested in pursuing a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine can learn more about fellowship training and access directories of accredited fellowship programs.

National Resident Match Program (NRMP)

The hospice and palliative medicine subspecialty is participating in the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) Medical Specialties Matching Program. Participation in the Match program allows applicants and programs to consider all options before making a decision. This match service is specific to ACGME-accredited fellowship programs.

AIRE Program

The HPM Mid-Career Fellowship was approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) through the Advancing Innovation in Residency Education (AIRE) program. The pilot has also been approved by the American Board of Internal Medicine (and now all qualifying Boards), American Board of Emergency Medicine, and the American Board of Family Medicine for certified diplomates.

In July 2020 the Mid-Career Fellowship expanded to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. In July 2021 the fellowship expanded to the Washington University/BJC/SLCH Consortium Program, the Massachusetts General Hospital/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Children’s Hospital Boston program, the George Washington University School of Medicine, the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Program, and the University of Minnesota Medical School Program.
