Session Overview
This session focuses on the evaluation and application of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic pain management modalities in serious and complex illness, supporting informed, patient‑centered diagnostic and clinical decision‑making.
What Learners Will Gain
Learners will self‑report the ability to apply, analyze, and evaluate pain management modalities when making appropriate diagnostic and clinical decisions that have important consequences for patients and families experiencing serious and complex illness.
Pharmacologic Pain Management
• Analgesics and opioid therapy, including:
– Pharmacology
– Adverse effects
– Routes of administration
– Equianalgesic dosing
– Medication management
• Nonopioid therapies, including:
– Steroids
– Lidocaine
– Buprenorphine
– Ketamine
• Adjuvant medications, including pharmacology, adverse effects, and routes of administration
Nonpharmacologic and Interdisciplinary Approaches
• Nonpharmacologic interventions, including behavioral and integrative modalities
• Interventional pain management techniques
• Rehabilitative therapies
Special Clinical Considerations
• Pain management in the context of organ failure and altered pharmacology
• Integrative medicine approaches to pain and symptom management
