Rahee Nerukar Reflects on Next Gen Experience

Rahee M. Nerukar, MD

The AAHPM Next Gen Scholars for Equity in Hospice and Palliative Medicine program sponsors residents from underrepresented communities who are interested in hospice and palliative medicine (HPM). Research shows that providing culturally effective HPM services to marginalized communities can help address disparities. Additionally, studies indicate that healthcare outcomes and patient satisfaction improve significantly when physicians reflect the populations they serve. However, African American and Hispanic physicians make up less than 5% and 8% of hospice and palliative medicine fellows, respectively. To address this gap, AAHPM has developed this program to introduce and promote hospice and palliative medicine to a wider range of resident physicians.

AAHPM conducted interviews with our inaugural group of Next Generation Scholars, who joined the program in August 2023. We sought to gain insight into their motivations for applying and what they find fulfilling about being part of the Next Gen Scholars program.

What drew you to this opportunity?
I decided to apply to the Next Gen Scholars program because I was drawn to the unique mentorship structure that the program provided. I plan to apply to a geriatrics/palliative care fellowship and found that I was lacking support and mentorship to guide me towards my career goals.

What do you hope to gain from the program?
As I hoped, I was matched with a mentor who has not only guided me in this program but has shared her perspective on not only her career in medicine, but her life as well. Her wisdom has been invaluable, and we likely would not have crossed paths had it not been for the Next Gen Scholars program.

What has been the biggest benefit to being a scholar in the program?
As a woman of color pursuing a career in palliative medicine, I hope to gain perspectives from other practitioners with similar identities to mine. I hope to connect with likeminded individuals through this program and allow their perspectives to give me insight into my own journey in medicine.

What is something you have accomplished already that you are proud of?
Compared to 1 year ago, I have more clarity on my future career and have identified the guiding values that will help me face challenges along the way.

How do you see this program benefiting you in the future?
For me, connection – to peers, mentors, and patients – is critical to my success. This program has helped become more connected within the field of palliative medicine.

What’s your next goal you wish to accomplish?
I look forward to continuing to work with my mentor on a research project for the Next Gen Scholars program, and to continued career conversations.

The Next Gen Scholars for Equity in HPM program is now accepting applications, apply before July 1, 2024. Visit our webpage for more information.
