Shrenik Ostwal, MD, FIPM, CLF Dip’s journey into palliative care was unplanned—or perhaps it was destiny. Initially drawn into medicine by the drive to ease the profound suffering of seriously ill patients, Dr. Ostwal discovered a deeper calling in 2012, a time when palliative medicine was still emerging in India.
It was during his residency that a mentor introduced him to the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). Over the past seven years, AAHPM has significantly shaped Dr. Ostwal’s career, enhancing his ability to deliver compassionate care even from afar. A pivotal moment came when he attended the 2025 Annual Assembly of Hospice and Palliative Care, thanks to receiving the International Physicians Scholarship. The event opened up remarkable opportunities for professional growth and learning far beyond what was available to him previously.
At the Assembly, Shrenik Ostwal, MD was particularly inspired by educational sessions and advanced knowledge-sharing opportunities. However, the most impactful experiences were the global networking opportunities, which continue to influence his medical practice profoundly. Currently working at NMC Provita International Medical Center in Abu Dhabi, UAE, he vividly recalls learning about innovative approaches, such as using cannabis for symptom management in end-of-life care, and connecting deeply with passionate colleagues through the Global Networking Special Interest Group.
Yet, Shrenik Ostwal, MD is acutely aware of the scarcity of palliative care professionals in regions like parts of India and the UAE. Scholarships like the AAHPM International Physicians Scholarship are instrumental in bridging this critical gap. They empower young clinicians from underserved regions, nurture their talents, and inspire them to become leaders in their communities.
By supporting initiatives like the International Physicians Scholarship, generous donors can create meaningful opportunities for the next generation of compassionate caregivers around the globe. Contributions to this scholarship fund directly enable younger professionals to access critical training and global insights, ultimately alleviating suffering and bringing comfort to countless patients and their families worldwide.
