AAHPM is accepting proposals for new Position Statements, which are developed through a transparent, evidence-based process. New ideas may be submitted by completing the online proposal form.
Proposals are welcome from AAHPM Strategic Coordinating Committees, Committees, Councils, Communities, and individual AAHPM members.
Prioritization and Development Process
Proposals for Position Statements may be submitted year-round and are accepted during designated submission periods for review by the Position Statements Committee.
Each proposal is evaluated using a standardized rubric that assesses potential reach, impact on serious illness care, strength of the evidence base, and the anticipated effort or complexity of development. Proposals are also reviewed for their relevance to access and quality of care, opportunities for patient or caregiver involvement, and alignment with the Academy’s 2024-2027 Strategic Plan.
Based on this review, proposals are prioritized into one of four categories:
- Highly aligned and addressing an urgent policy or ethical issue
- Important but less time‑sensitive
- Valuable with limited reach or impact
- Not aligned with Academy values or priorities
Writing Group Formation and Drafting
Proposals selected for development move forward with the creation of a dedicated writing group with appropriate subject matter expertise. Initial writing group members are drawn from AAHPM’s annual volunteer application process.
Additional members may be appointed from within or outside the Academy to ensure the necessary expertise, diverse representation, and appropriate disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest.
Drafting a new Position Statement typically takes six to twelve months. Once complete, the draft is posted on the AAHPM website for a 10‑business‑day open comment period. Member feedback is reviewed by the writing group and the Position Statement Committee and incorporated as appropriate. The final statement is then submitted to the AAHPM Board for consideration and approval.
