Dr. El Shanawany is a physician executive, palliative care physician, healthcare ethics leader, and academic physician with over 14 years of experience leading clinical transformation across academic medical centers, safety-net health systems, post-acute care, and ambulatory care. She currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at Nassau Health Care Corporation and as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Family Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Prior to her current role, Dr. El Shanawany held leadership positions across New York healthcare systems, including Associate Medical Director at Staten Island University Hospital and Regional Director for Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Northwell Health. Earlier in her career, she served as Associate Fellowship Director of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, reflecting her longstanding commitment to education, mentorship, and leadership development.

Dr. El Shanawany currently serves on the AAHPM Board of Directors as a Director-at-Large and as Chair of the Workforce and Career Development Strategic Coordinating Committee. She also serves on the Leadership Development Committee and previously chaired the Leadership and Career Development Committee.

Through AAHPM, Dr. El Shanawany has helped develop and lead national leadership programs, including Empower: Elevating Personal Leadership through Self-Discovery and Strategic Business Planning and Moving Up Without Meltdowns. She is also an invited national speaker on physician leadership, healthcare strategy, quality, ethics, and executive leadership, with a particular passion for developing future healthcare leaders across disciplines. Dr. El Shanawany earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Health Administration (MHA) and is board certified in Family Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She is Healthcare Ethics Consultation Certified (HEC-C) and is committed to advancing hospice and palliative medicine through compassionate, patient-centered care, ethical leadership, and the development of future leaders.
