In this Donor Spotlight, Janet Bull, MD MBA FAAHPM shares what first drew her to AAHPM, how her experiences have shaped her perspective on giving, and the impact she hopes to make through her support.
1.) What first drew you to AAHPM and inspired you to contribute?
When I attended my first AAHPM meeting in 2000, I stopped by the AAHPM kiosk to learn more about educational and mentoring opportunities. At the time, I was an OB-GYN physician who recognized a knowledge gap in caring for seriously ill patients. I wanted to deepen my understanding and connect with others in this emerging field. AAHPM provided the community and resources I needed to succeed.
2.) Has hospice or palliative care played a personal or professional role in your life that influenced your decision to give?
Absolutely. The work we do as hospice and palliative care physicians is profoundly meaningful. Being with patients who face life-limiting illnesses, having honest and compassionate conversations, and holding sacred spaces with them has helped me appreciate how precious life truly is. Supporting AAHPM feels like a natural way to give back and to honor the people and experiences that have shaped my journey.
3.) What impact do you hope your donation will have on patients, families, and professionals?
Dying in America is still a difficult topic, but it’s a reality that touches everyone. The Academy plays a vital role not only in educating clinicians but also in helping the public understand their choices and receive care aligned with their values. I hope my gift supports AAHPM’s efforts to empower families to ask for hospice and palliative care, access helpful resources, and navigate a complex healthcare system. I also value the Academy’s strong advocacy for policies that benefit seriously ill patients and promote the growth of palliative care.
4.) What advice would you give someone considering a gift to AAHPM?
If you’ve benefitted from AAHPM’s resources or community, giving back is a meaningful way to pay it forward. Advocacy for our specialty is essential, especially since current fee-for-service models often don’t adequately support palliative care. The Academy continues to pursue sustainable payment models that strengthen our field and ultimately improve care for patients and families. Every contribution, big or small, helps make that possible.
