VALUES
AAHPM is committed to six core values that guide our actions, decisions, and interactions.
What is hospice care?
Hospice care focuses on the care, comfort, and quality of life of a loved one with a life-limiting illness who is approaching the end-of-life. At some point, it may not be possible to cure a serious illness, or a patient may choose not to continue treatment. Selecting Hospice ensures that the patient receives quality care and loved ones are provided support.
What is palliative care?
Palliative care is specialized medical care designed to relieve the symptoms and pressure caused by serious or chronic illness. This patient and family-centered care is suitable for any age or disease stage, with the aim of achieving the best possible quality of life for both the patient and their loved ones. If your family member is struggling with the symptoms of a disease, ask their physician for a palliative care consultation.
Who provides hospice and palliative care and where can patients get it?
Care is usually provided by an interdisciplinary team of experts, including palliative care doctors, nurses, and social workers. Chaplains, counselors, massage therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists, and others might also be part of the team. The team addresses the physical, psychological, spiritual, and practical burdens of illness and provides support to and works in partnership with the doctor. Care is offered in hospitals, long-term care facilities, hospices, or at home.
