A Palliative Care Imperative: Caring for Individuals with Serious Illness, Pain and Substance Use

Dr. Kathleen Broglio, national expert pain management and substance use disorders to share practice insights into caring for patients with overlapping serious illness, pain, and comorbid substance use. She will incorporate the foundations of holistic care outlined in the National Clinical Practice Guideline domains for quality palliative care as she aligns the core principles of treatment for substance use. Kathleen will present this learning through case presentations with outcomes of how best palliative and hospice practitioners can successfully respond to guiding and managing this complex component of care as we build on palliative care skills to effectively work with individuals with serious illness, pain, and substance use.
In this Grand Rounds lecture, participants will:
- Reflect upon feelings that arise when you think about caring for individuals with serious illness, pain and comorbid substance use.
- Outline basic concepts of pain management for individuals with pain and risks for substance misuse.
- Incorporate core palliative care skills into care for individuals with serious illness, pain and comorbid substance use.

Successful completion of this webinar includes attesting to meaningful activity participation and completion/submission of activity evaluation within the time frame designated. Evaluation period closes June 30 at 11:59pm CT for claiming CME or MOC credits.
