Our Tapestry of Uniqueness
Janet Bull, MD MBA HMDC FAAHPM
Every one of us has a story. We are shaped by the upbringing, events, and experiences that make up the tapestry of our lives. Each person we care for also has a story that is unique and connects them with others through similar and shared life experiences.
Narrative medicine is one of the tools we can use to help us grow and embrace cultural humility. It emphasizes and captures the unique stories of patients and serves as a way to gain understanding and insight into their plight. In the person’s narrative, if one listens, one can hear the vulnerability of being perceived as “other,” and the associated wounds that judgment brings. It also can teach us about a person’s values, beliefs, and causes of suffering.
